Compact sedans and hatchbacks are typically the first brand new car younger audiences purchase. Due to the price point and size, these are the vehicles that best suit a younger individual's lifestyle. Perhaps they don't need a big car to haul around their things or a massive backseat to keep their children comfortable. But that doesn't mean compact cars have to be dull and sober like they did a couple of decades ago. As a potential first car purchase, owners want a vehicle that stands out and the 2020 Hyundai Elantra is certainly one of those cars.
The Hyundai Elantra was noticeably updated for the 2019 model year with a new look front and rear with a few changes in the cabin space. With the sharp LED running lights cutting into the sizeable grille, the Elantra makes a design-forward statement. A few minor revisions inside the cabin include a slight remodeling of the HVAC controls and the dashboard layout. The hatchback alternative, the Elantra GT, was also updated for the 2019 model year but didn't receive as substantial of changes to the design.
Lots of available technology is available for the Elantra including a heated steering wheel, multiple versions of the touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated outboard seats front and rear, a hands-free trunk, and the latest active safety systems that appear on other more expensive Hyundai products. The Elantra has one powerplant, a 2.0L naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine that churns out 147hp and 132lb/ft, with a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. The higher trim levels will cut out the option of manual shifting, however, leaving the automatic as the only remaining option. The automatic transmission features the different driving modes that can alter the driving feel of the Elantra; these include Normal, Sport and Smart. The manual transmission does not have this feature.
Despite the packaging and small form factor of the Elantra, this compact sedan is able to do a lot with just a little. It's a spacious car inside with plenty of front row space for six-footers and lots more room to spare. The driving dynamics are pretty solid with a responsive and nicely-tuned automatic transmission that always knows what gear it is meant to be in. Steering has excellent communication and the brakes provide a consistent and strong feel through the pedal despite the Elantra featuring disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear.
